Gourangalal Das appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Korea.” He will succeed Amit Kumar, who is currently serving in the post
Digital Desk: A Senior diplomat Shri Gourangalal Das has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Korea, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Wednesday. Das is an experienced Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 1999 batch who is also currently working as a Joint Secretary in the MEA. He will presumably be undertaking his assignment in Seoul in the near future, according to the official statement.
The Indian Embassy in South Korea also posted the announcement on social media platform X, stating, “Gourangalal Das appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Korea.” He will succeed Amit Kumar, who is currently serving in the post.
This is announced soon after a high level visit to New Delhi by South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun this month. In his visit, Cho had a bilateral meeting with the External Affairs Minister of India S. Jaishankar and the two leaders focused on the strengthening of strategic relations between the two countries.
Recalling his own experience as the Ambassador of South Korea to India in 2015-2017, Cho complimented India by highlighting the transformation that has taken place in this nation under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and how that transformation has continued over the past 10 years.
India and South Korea share a long-standing and evolving relationship. Diplomatic ties were established on December 10, 1973, and were elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2010, followed by an upgrade to a Special Strategic Partnership during PM Modi's visit to Seoul in 2015.
In 2023, both countries celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations, hosting various cultural and diplomatic events to mark the milestone. This appointment by Das is an indication of the continuity of this important Indo-Pacific alliance.
