  • The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) have jointly called for the immediate withdrawal of all legal cases filed against individuals involved in various protest movements across Assam

The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) have jointly appealed to the Assam government, urging the immediate withdrawal of all cases registered against individuals who participated in various protest movements across the state. This unified demand underscores a long-standing concern among civil society groups regarding legal actions taken against activists and citizens exercising their right to dissent.

Representatives from both organisations highlighted that numerous cases, often filed during significant public agitations, continue to burden many young people and activists. They argued that these legal proceedings not only cause immense mental and financial distress to those involved but also create an atmosphere of fear, potentially stifling democratic expression in Assam. The organisations emphasised that many of these cases pertain to peaceful demonstrations and public assemblies, which are fundamental aspects of a democratic society.

Speaking on the matter, a spokesperson for the youth fronts reportedly stated that the government should adopt a humane approach and distinguish between genuine acts of dissent and criminal activities. They reiterated their stance that the continuation of such cases undermines the spirit of justice and reconciliation, especially in a region with a history of vibrant social and political movements. The groups called for a comprehensive review of all pending cases, particularly those linked to public protests, with a view to their expeditious withdrawal. This move, they believe, would foster greater trust between the administration and its citizens, allowing individuals to participate in public discourse without apprehension of legal repercussions.
