End of an Era: Lata Mangeshkar and her voice says it all
Digital Desk: As Gulzar quote, "Naam gum jayega' — 'meri awaaz hi pehchaan hain'- beautifully describes the eight decades of singing career by the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar.

Lata Mangeshkar could never be described in words. Words will be less to describe her countless contribution to the Indian music industry. Several generations have heard her songs.

"When you are talking about Michael Angelo, Beethoven or Shakespeare, the name says it all. But, Lata Mangeshkar's greatness is her name itself. There is no other word that can encapsulate her," Javed Akhtar had once said.

Lata started her profession as a 13-year-old and stayed unbeatable over the next several decades. She was also an entire era of Music. Lata Mangeshkar has always invested all she had in herself in every song she sang. Her voice pitched the clarity and sweetness that could give relief. She sang like a 'nightangle'; she indeed was.

The legendary singer expressed, "Music is my life during an event. I have nothing else. Even today — after all these years — I am scared that the composer will be unhappy with my rendition. When I start singing, the world disappears."

She sang like no one existed before her; she ruled the world with her voice. A singer who has had a career spanning eight decades and has sung innumerable melodies in 36 languages.

However, every great person has a narrative of initial struggles and determinations. Lata initially was rejected by many in the Indian film industry for her nightingale voice. She once recalled in an interview, "It was difficult. My carefree days came to an abrupt end."

She was a playful girl during her youth days. She was always on the lanes playing and stealing fruits from the neighbour's garden. She received Music and its essence from her family, and God has gifted her with a voice that has no replacement.

The narrative of Lata Mangeshkar is at once the saga of individual achievements and how women transformed the course of penning history.

On a heartbreaking note, Sunday has turned gloomy for all the nation's people. India has lost a gem, a gem that has no replacement. Lata Mangeshkar passed away on Sunday at 92 in Mumbai.

The doctors reported the cause of her death to be a multi-organ failure. Shiv Sena, MP Sanjay Raut was among the firsts to share the news on social media. He tweeted in Marathi, "The era is over."

Known as the 'Nightingale of the Bollywood, Lata Mangeshkar gave numerous hits to the Indian film industry, which would be penned in history with name.

She was born in a family of musicians on September 28, 1929. Lata was the eldest daughter of the Marathi musician Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar. At five, Lata started to act in her father's musicals.

In 1942, Lata took up playback singing as a full-time career under Master Vinayak's direction. She shifted to Mumbai in 1945, and she delivered her first hit in 1949 with the song 'Ayega Anewala' from the Madhubala-starrer Mahal. Since then, the rest is history.
