More than nine years after the case was initially brought by a former student of the godman, a Gandhinagar court on Monday found Asaram Bapu guilty.
According to the FIR (First Information Report) against Asaram Bapu and six others that was filed at the Chandkheda police station in Ahmedabad on October 6, 2013, the self-styled godman had raped the woman disciple, who was from Surat, on numerous occasions between 2001 and 2006 while she was living at his ashram at Motera close to Ahmedabad. Fortunately, she was able to flee.
Six other defendants, including Asaram's wife Laxmiben, their daughter, and four disciples who were charged with aiding and abetting the murder, were cleared by the Sessions court due to a lack of evidence, nevertheless.
The 81-year-old godman is currently imprisoned in Jodhpur for the rest of his life.
