Shehbaz Sharif Elected as New Prime Minister of Pakistan

This comes after Imran Khan was removed as Pakistan's prime minister via a no-confidence motion after the National Assembly debated the issue for more than 12 hours on Saturday.

Digital Desk: Shehbaz Sharif was elected as the Prime Minister of Pakistan on Monday (April 11). Sharif, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president, submitted his nominations for the top position yesterday. Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader, was also a candidate for the top post. This comes after Imran Khan was removed as Pakistan's prime minister via a no-confidence motion after the National Assembly debated the issue for more than 12 hours on Saturday.

Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan's new prime minister, has been the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly since August 2018. He previously served as Punjab's chief minister three times, making him the province's longest-serving CM.

Meanwhile, prior to the election for Pakistan's new prime minister, Imran Khan resigned as a member of the National Assembly. This follows the leader's statement that he will not sit in assemblies with "thieves."

"Whoever chooses and elects the Prime Minister, whoever has 16 billion and 8 billion rupees in corruption cases, cannot be a big insult to the country. We have decided to resign from the National Assembly," Imran Khan said.

Confirming the decision, Pakistan's former Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed stated that sitting in the assembly would enhance the leader of the Opposition, Shehbaz Sharif and that it has therefore been decided to resign from the National Assembly.

"During the parliamentary party meeting, Imran Khan supported my suggestion. Khan would visit Peshawar on Wednesday. Each Sunday, Imran Khan will call people to come out against the foreign conspiracy," Rasheed claimed.
