September 3rd marks the 87th Birth anniversary of Bhogeshwar Baruah, the first Arjuna awardee from the North East...

Digital Desk: Assam's prominent personality and Indian former-athlete & coach Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah was particularly the first Assamese to win gold at an international event, he won the gold medal in an 800-metre running event at the 1966 Asian Game, he also secured a silver medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay in the 1970 Asian games. To tell more about him, he also received the Arjuna Award in the year 1966.

Today September 3rd marks the 87th Birth anniversary of Bhogeshwar Baruah, the first Arjuna awardee from the North East.

Furthermore, today also marks the completion of 40 years of Abhiruchi Sports Day, every year it's been celebrated to honour the eminent person Bhogeshwar Baruah's birthday.

Along with other parts of the state, this day is celebrated today at Sivasagar under the initiative of Rangpur Jyoti Club.

Reportedly, a mass run programme is carried out in the morning from the station intersection to the statue of Bhogeshwar Baruah on the banks of the ancient Bor (Big) Pond.

Several dignitaries, as well as athletes and well-wishers, have attended the programme.
