In 2024, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad K Sangma announced their official partnership with Japan for the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival. This collaboration began after the Japanese Ambassador’s visit to Meghalaya in 2023. The partnership was aimed enhance the festival's appeal and offer a glimpse into Japanese culture. This alliance also introduced a “Japan Zone” at the festival that showcased the country’s diverse and rich culture.
International Expansion

By Air: The tourists can travel from the nearest airport which is the Umroi Airport about 30 kilometres from Shillong. Alternatively, the travellers can also travel by the nearest international airport that is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi international Airport in Guwahati.
By Train: The tourists can travel from the nearest station that is located in Guwahati and then from Guwahati there are taxis and buses that will connect to Shillong.
By Road: From Guwahati, Shillong is also accessible by road where it is a 3 hour drive via the national highway. Shared cabs and buses are also available that also offers many scenic views of the surrounding hills and valleys.

Highlights from the Previous Year Cherry Blossom Festival
This two-day festival was the perfect weekend getaway featured music and performances that made the visitors energised. Last year’s festival was packed with top artists from the local scene to across India and all around the world. Big names included the headliners of the festival such as Boney M, R&B Megastar Akon, DJ R3hab and Clean Bandit. The Cherry Blossom Festival is much more than just a stage for big names it also gives a platform to the local artists giving them the exposure in which they can reach their full potential and showcase their talent to the audience. Alongside the great music and performances the festival also offered a great food and entertainment for the visitors. One of the other attractions was the Japan Arena – a section that flaunted the culture, heritage and food of Japan.
While the festival centers on music and good vibes each day had its unique experience for the visitors. Day 1 was a nostalgic journey down the memory lane with the attendees dancing and singing to hits back from ‘80s and ‘90s. Performances of artists such as Queen Sensation, Boney M and Akon brought back beloved classics.

The festivities will stretch from the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and all the way to Ward’s Lake, with a wide range of concerts, pop-up events, and interactive experiences. The first day of the festival will feature an exciting performance by international pop-R&B sensation Jason Derulo alongside Ireland’s iconic rock band, The Script. With over 220 million records sold between them, these two global icons will undoubtedly create an unforgettable experience in Shillong, marking one of most anticipated music events in India.
