Xi Jinping was elected general secretary of the Communist Party of China...
Digital Desk: Chinese President Xi Jinping has won a historic third term as the country's top leader, making him among the most powerful leaders China has seen since the Chinese Communist Party was founded by Mao Zedong.
Xi Jinping was elected general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) at the committee's first plenary session on Sunday, according to the state media agency Xinhua.
The session presided over by Xi, was attended by 203 members of the 20th CPC Central Committee and 168 alternate members. During the session, Xi was also named chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission.
The once-every-five-year National Congress concluded after a week-long meeting. The Congress revealed the newly constituted Central Committee, the party's top leadership body, which included Xi. Reportedly, only 11 of the 205 members listed are women.
The Chinese Premier, the second most senior official after Xi, is not on the new Central Committee, implying that Li will step down from his party role.
The preceding Saturday was marked by the scandal surrounding former President Hu Jintao's unceremonious withdrawal from Congress. During the closing ceremony, the 79-year-old former leader, Xi Jinping's predecessor, was unexpectedly taken out of the hall by two men.
Chinese media Hu was "not feeling well," when he was unexpectedly pulled from the closing ceremony of China's Communist Party's 20th Congress on Saturday.
"When he was not feeling well during the session, his staff, for his health, accompanied him to a room next to the meeting venue for a rest. Now, he is much better," the state agency added.
The congress took place during one of the most dangerous periods in recent years in international affairs. China continues to be a steadfast supporter of President Vladimir Putin, who is trying to establish himself as a great Russian leader when a war is raging in Ukraine.
At the same time, tensions across the Taiwan Strait are at their greatest in decades, as China strives to bully Taipei into acquiescence.
