Digital Desk: The Election Commission said on Saturday that a byelection to fill the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat, which became vacant after Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav passed away, as well as five assembly byelections in as many states, will take place on December 5.
Yadav passed away last month after a prolonged illness.
The Rampur assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh, which became vacant after SP leader Mohammad Azam Khan was disqualified, is one of the five seats going for the bypolls.
Khan, the Rampur MLA, was disqualified by the speaker after being convicted and sentenced to three years in jail in a hate speech case filed against him in April 2019.
Sardarshahar assembly constituency in Rajasthan's Churu district, another bypoll constituency, became vacant following the death of Congress MLA Bhanwar Lal Sharma on October 9. He was 77.
With his death, the Congress now has 107 out of the 200 MLAs in the Rajasthan assembly. The BJP has 71 MLAs, Rashtriya Loktantrik Party three, CPI(M) and Bhartiya Tribal Party two each, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) one and 13 are Independent MLAs. One seat is vacant.
Other assembly seats where bypolls will be held are Padampur in Odisha, Kurhani in Bihar, and Bhanupratappur in Chhattisgarh.
The counting of votes will take place on December 8 to coincide with the ballot counts in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.
