IOC member Nita Ambani expresses her optimism toward the amended IOA draft constitution
Ambani led a group earlier this year for India's bid to host the IOC Session in 2023 when India was almost unanimously granted the rights after a 40-year absence as part of her ongoing efforts to realise the Indian Olympic dream.

Digital Desk: International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Nita Ambani on Saturday welcomed the newly-amended draft constitution of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), terming it a landmark moment in India's Olympic dream.

She said it makes her optimistic about the Olympic sports, especially with the steps taken towards greater representation for athletes and women in the sports administration in India.

She said in a statement, “I congratulate Justice Nageswara Rao for a landmark moment in India’s Olympic movement as we move towards a more inclusive and promising future,” Nita Ambani said in a statement.

“The amended draft constitution of the IOA made in consultation with my colleagues at the IOC makes me very optimistic, especially with the steps taken towards greater representation for athletes and women in the administration of Indian sport,” she added.

A retired judge, Justice L Nageswara Rao, drafted the final draft of the IOA's updated constitution, which includes several significant amendments that can be legally ratified during its general body meeting on November 10. Following that, the IOA elections will take place from December 5–7, 2022, before the next IOC Executive Board meeting.

Justice Nageswara Rao sent the updated copy to significant stakeholders on November 3 following instructions from the IOC and the Supreme Court of India.

This revised draft was created in close consultation with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and following the Delhi High Court's recommendations from August 16, 2022, to ensure that it adheres to the Olympic Charter and the fundamental rules of good governance for the Olympic Movement.

With eight sportspersons of outstanding merit (SOMs), it makes changes to increase athlete representation. It also makes changes to increase the representation of women in various administrative and voting roles.

Additionally, 2023 is a crucial year for the Indian Olympic Movement because Mumbai will play home to the IOC Session.

This session will be the first time in 40 years that India will host an IOC Session and is an important step in India’s Olympic journey.

“I strongly believe that this paves the way for India to achieve our true potential in sport. I look forward to working closely with the newly elected members of the IOA to fuel India’s Olympic ambitions, starting with the successful hosting of the 2023 IOC Session in Mumbai and the India House at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Jai Hind!” Nita Ambani added in the statement.

Ambani led a group earlier this year for India's bid to host the IOC Session in 2023 when India was almost unanimously granted the rights after a 40-year absence as part of her ongoing efforts to realise the Indian Olympic dream.

The IOC Session will accommodate IOC Members, International Federation (IF) representatives, and other significant Olympic Movement participants, giving India a significant chance to highlight its athletic aspirations.

As an IOC member and the founding chair of the Reliance Foundation, Nita Ambani has been a steadfast supporter of the "athlete first" philosophy and a passionate advocate for girls and women's sports.
