Three Northeastern states, Tripura, Nagaland, and Meghalaya, recently completed their assembly elections.
Digital Desk: The Election Commission announced the dates for by-elections to Parliamentary and Assembly constituencies in Meghalaya, Punjab, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday.
Byelections for the Jalandhar parliamentary constituency in Punjab, Jharsuguda Assembly constituency in Odisha, Chhanbey and Suar in Uttar Pradesh, and Sohiong in Meghalaya will be held on May 10, according to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar at a press conference today.
He went on to say that the results would be announced on May 13.
Notably, the bypoll polling and counting dates coincide with the Karnataka Assembly elections.
The EC had earlier today set May 10 as the polling date for Karnataka Assembly Elections.
"There are 224 Assembly constituencies, with 36 reserved for SCs and 15 reserved for STs. The total electorate in the state is 5,21,73,579 crores, with males constituting 2.62 crores and females constituting 2.59 crores. The total number of electors over the age of 80 is 12.15 lakh. It represents a 32% increase over 2018. It also includes 16,976 proud 100-year-old voters. The number of people with disabilities (PWDs) has risen to 5.55 million. This is a nearly 150 percent increase "CEC stated.
"Karnataka has 58,282 polling stations, 20,866 of which are urban. The average number of voters per polling place is 883. We take four to five measures on all of the sensitive booths that have been identified. There would be CAPF, webcasting, or a micro-observer. We tend to put more vigour and vigil on the sensitive booths when all of these factors are combined "Kumar provided information.
Kumar went on to say that 240 model polling stations will be made eco-friendly and green booths, and that 100 booths will be managed solely by people with disabilities.
Karnataka will hold elections for 224 seats.
The Election Commission announced earlier this month that it has introduced the facility to Vote-from-Home (VFH) for people over the age of 80 and those with disabilities in the state's upcoming assembly elections.
It should be noted that three Northeastern states, Tripura, Nagaland, and Meghalaya, recently completed their assembly elections.
