Digital Desk: A part of the PA Sangma Football Stadium in Tura, Meghalaya, which was inaugurated in December last year, has collapsed, officials said.

The well-known stadium, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, is part of the PA Sangma Sports Complex, which is being constructed by the government at a cost of Rs 127 crore, they said.

They also stated that no one was injured in the Thursday incident.

"A section of the peripheral retaining wall of the PA Sangma Sports Complex's football stadium collapsed. The primary cause has been identified as damage caused by heavy rains in Tura and the West Garo Hills region," a statement issued by the Chief Minister's Office said, as reported by PTI.

"The causes of the collapse of a portion of the retaining wall are being investigated. The Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, started a formal probe into the matter," the statement added.

In May of last year, a part of the under-construction Meghalaya Assembly building collapsed. The building's 70-tonne dome collapsed, triggering a political uproar in the state before the Assembly elections.
