Arshdeep Singh scripts history, becomes 1st Indian pacer to pick ODI 5-wicket haul vs South Africa

Arshdeep became just the fourth bowler for India to take five wickets in one-day internationals against South Africa.

Digital Desk: In a one-day international match against South Africa on Sunday, December 17, Arshdeep Singh made history as he became the first Indian bowler to take five wickets in that particular match. As he overcame a challenging T20I series showing to frighten the Proteas, who won the toss and chose to bat, Arshdeep breathed fire in Johannesburg on Pink Day.

In order to ensure that the South African hitters had a difficult time on the Wanderer's surface, which featured bounce and pace, Arshdeep Singh had a lengthy spell from acting skipper KL Rahul, ending with figures of 5 for 37 in 10 overs.

Arshdeep became just the fourth bowler for India to take five wickets in one-day internationals against South Africa. Additionally, he became the second bowler after Yuzvendra Chahal to take five wickets for India in One-Day Internationals played in South Africa.

Five Indian bowlers defeated South Africa.

    • Arshdeep Singh - 5 for 37 in Johannesburg in 2023

    • Yuzvendra Chahal 0 5 for 22 in Centurion in 2018

    • Ravindra Jadeja - 5 for 33 in Kolkata in 2023

    • Sunil Joshi - 5 for 5 in Nairobi in 1999

    • With nine wickets between them, Indian pacers Ashdeep and Avesh Khan hunted in packs as South Africa's batting order collapsed, losing wickets at an alarming rate.

    • Andile Phehlukwayo struck a vital 33 to ensure that South Africa had something on the board for their bowlers to work with. After being reduced to 58 for 7 and then 73 for 8, South Africa huffed and puffered beyond 100. As a matter of fact, on his very last over, Arshdeep removed Phehlukwayo by leg before wicket.

    •  After making his debut in the 50-over format in 2022, Ashdeep Singh had played three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) prior to Sunday. But in all three of those games, he had failed to register a wicket, with one game being abandoned due to inclement weather. But Arshdeep more than made up for it during a brilliant performance in South Africa.

    • The fast bowler claimed the first four wickets claimed by the South Africans. With one floating beyond the off-stump, he got Reeza Hendricks, and with an inswinger, he got Rassie van der Dussen for a golden duck. In his opening over of the match, Arshdeep was on a hat-trick.

    • After pitching on a decent length, Ashdeep then produced a ripper that seemed to dismiss Heinrich Klaasen, one of the best ODI players. Even though Arshdeep had to wait a little while for his fifth wicket, he gave it everything he had to break Phehlukwayo's opposition.
