Suryakumar Yadav out of Afghanistan series with ankle injury, Hardik Pandya unlikely to play as well: Report

It may take six weeks for the 31-year-old's suspected tear to heal after he injured his ankle while fielding against South Africa in Johannesburg.

Digital Desk: Suryakumar Yadav is all set to miss the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan starting January 11 due to an ankle injury sustained during the recent series against South Africa.

It may take six weeks for the 31-year-old's suspected tear to heal after he injured his ankle while fielding against South Africa in Johannesburg.

"Currently, the Medical Science staff at NCA has declared Surya injured. He reported for rehab work. His suspension prevents him from participating in the three-week match against Afghanistan. He may play for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy in February to assess his fitness before participating in the IPL since he is unlikely to be selected for Tests," a BCCI source informed PTI.

Hardik Pandya's odds of recovering from his ankle injury are currently considered slim, as is also known.

The insider continued, "There is currently no information regarding Hardik's fitness status, and it is still highly doubtful that he will be available before the end of the IPL."

Unless the selectors wish to go ahead and name Ravindra Jadeja, as the stand-in leader for a series, they may have to ask Rohit Sharma to captain the team in the absence of Surya or Hardik. Jadeja, however, must control his exertion because he will play in all five Test matches against England.

Even Ruturaj Gaikwad, the captain of the Asian Games, will miss the series due to a broken finger.

Jitesh Sharma to keep wickets vs AFG

Ishan Kishan pulled out from the South Africa Tests lately citing "personal reasons," and after spending the previous year traveling, there are tidings of the keeper-batter giving mental health priority. There have been rumors that Jitesh Sharma will take wickets in his absence and that he might not be available for Afghanistan. "No one will question Kishan about his decision to skip the Tests, as the BCCI respects the privacy of its players." Rahul might not have wanted to stay around when it was declared that he will be the keeper in the Test matches. If you are not selected frequently, it does cost you.
