Digital Desk: On Sunday, during Rajasthan Royals' (RR) IPL 2022 match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Ravichandran Ashwin became the first batter in Indian Premier League history to deliberately retire out.
When it came time to bat at No. 6, Ashwin let Riyan Parag join him in the middle and bat with Shimron Hetmyer. RR posted 165 for six in 20 overs, setting a target of 166 runs, despite Parag scoring only eight runs off four balls (including a six). Meanwhile, Hetmyer smashed an undefeated 59 runs off 36 balls, including four fours and six sixes.
Ian Raphael Bishop, a former West Indies cricketer, reacted to the incident by calling it "fascinating T20 tactics." He tweeted, "Ashwin retired out is fascinating T20 tactics. T20 is causing us to rethink how we conceive the game off in the 21st century."
Hetmyer remarked after the RR's innings that he was unaware of Ashwin's retiring strategy and applauded it.
"I had no idea (Ashwin's retirement) was coming; he was also a little tired. It turned out to be a viable decision because the kid (Parag) hit a six for us. We have a decent chance of winning. The bowlers must retain the ball in excellent positions; if they do, we will have a chance to win ", Hetmyer explained.
