Digital Desk: In a tragic turn of events, a railway bridge that was being built in Mizoram collapsed, killing at least 17 workers and injuring many more.

On Wednesday morning, at around 10 am, the incident was reported while the construction of bridges was underway nearby Sairang, around 21 kilometres from Aizawl.

Over 35 to 40 workers were reportedly present at the scene when the terrible incident occurred, leading some to speculate that several people may be trapped.

State Chief Minister Zoramthanga, meanwhile, expressed grief over the loss of life in the accident.

“Under construction railway over bridge at Sairang, near Aizawl collapsed today; at least 15 workers died: Rescue under progress. Deeply saddened and affected by this tragedy. I extend my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. Sending gratitude to the people who have come out in large numbers to help with rescue operations," Zoramthanga wrote on platform ‘X’ (formally known as Twitter).
