Digital Desk: A four-year-old boy died after his throat was slit by the sharp string of a kite in Gujarat's Mahisagar district on the occasion of Uttarayan on Sunday. Several other people were injured in kite-related events throughout the state, officials said.
Kite flying has long been associated with the Uttarayan festival, also known as Makar Sankranti.

Tarun Machhi, the boy, was on his way home on his father's motorcycle on Sunday afternoon when a kite string slit his throat close to Boradi village, according to a district police station official from Kothamba.

The kid was sitting in the front seat of the motorcycle. According to the official, he suffered a big gash on his neck and passed away from severe bleeding before he could be given treatment.

On Uttarayan, at least 66 people in Gujarat suffered injuries from kite threads, according to EMRI Green Health Services, which runs the state's 108 ambulance service.

Of these, Ahmedabad reported 27 kite-related injuries, according to EMRI. It stated that there were seven of these cases in Vadodara, six in Surat, four in Rajkot, and four in Bhavnagar.
