Digital Desk: In a significant move, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the successful reclamation of 8,000 hectares of forest land in Assam, previously encroached upon by suspected Bangladeshi nationals. This operation resulted in the eviction of over 48,000 houses, a bold step in the state's commitment to addressing challenges in its forests.
Speaking at the Assam BJP's Executive Meeting, attended by national president JP Nadda, Sarma emphasized the government's simultaneous efforts to rehabilitate the poor families displaced by this initiative. This comprehensive approach highlights the state's commitment to environmental conservation and social responsibility.
Assam has long grappled with issues such as deforestation, leading to increased soil erosion, loss of fertility, and potential climate changes, along with the looming threat of wildlife extinction. To counter these problems, the government has initiated large-scale plantation drives, aiming to increase forest cover from 36% to 38% over the next five years.
The state's forests are divided into Reserved Forests (66.58%) and Unclassed Forests (33.42%). Additionally, Assam boasts a network of protected areas, including 7 National Parks and 18 wildlife sanctuaries, covering 4.98% of the geographical area.
Between 2016 and 2020, the Assam Forest Department took decisive action against illegal encroachments, demolishing 2,960 unauthorized structures within reserve forests, wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, and other protected areas. A total of 194 individuals were arrested for their involvement in these encroachments.
Moreover, the department has actively generated revenue from sand and stone quarries under minor mineral concession areas, contributing to the state's economy while ensuring the protection of forest lands.
These collective efforts underscore the Assam government's commitment to preserving its natural heritage and biodiversity, striking a balance between the needs of its human population and the imperative of environmental conservation.
