New Delhi: Admiral R. Hari Kumar, who served as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, has replaced retired Admiral Karambir Singh and took over as the 25th Chief of the Indian Naval Staff.
“It is a matter of distinguished honour for me to take charge as the Chief of Naval Staff. Indian Navy’s focus is on our national maritime concerns and hurdles,” Admiral Kumar stated as he received the Guard of Honour at the South Block in Delhi.
The 59-year-old chief was commissioned into the executive branch of the Navy in January 1983. He was managing Mumbai-based Western Naval Command earlier.
The chief was born on April 12, 1962. The National Defence Academy graduate was selected into the Indian Navy on January 1, 1983, and he is the first Navy chief to hail from Kerala.

Kumar has taken over the Navy’s control when the department of military operations is headed by General Bipin Rawat. Rawat has also urged the three services to promote their continuing studies on the work of theater commands. This command will employ the military’s support for future battles and operations including offering complete reports within six months.
Kumar has been enriched with the Param Vishist Seva Medal (PVSM). He also received Ati Vishist Seva Medal (AVSM), including Vishist Seva Medal(VSM).
