Rushdie was scheduled to speak at the Chautauqua Institution outside of New York City when the tragedy happened. The audience, which contained about 2,500 individuals, was afterwards cleared out. The Chautauqua Institution released a statement after the attack that read, "What many of us witnessed today was a brutal act of hate that rocked us to our core."

According to Mr. Sullivan's statement. In addition to denouncing the stabbing, New York Governor Kathy Hochul praised Rushdie as "an individual who has spent decades speaking truth to power."

Salman Rushdie, an Indian-born British citizen who has spent the last 20 years living in the US, has endured threats since his 1988 book The Satanic Verses was published. Some religious leaders viewed the book as offensive to the Prophet Mohammed.

After the Iranian government said in 1998 that it would not implement the "fatwa" or edict, Mr. Rushdie started to come out of his life of hiding. Rushdie has resided in the US from the year 2000.
