Lata Mangeshkar, affectionately known as the “Nightingale of India,” died on January 6 at the age of 92 due to multiple organ failure.
Digital Desk: The 64th Annual Grammy Awards, held a week after the Oscars, also omitted legendary Indian playback singer Lata Mangeshkar from the ‘In Memoriam’ section during the ceremony held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr., Ben Platt, and Rachel Zegler performed songs by late Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim in the Grammys’ 2022 In Memoriam section. Moreover, Taylor Hawkins and Tom Parker also received recognitions.
Fans expressing their disappointment with the Grammy awards took to Twitter to slam the Recording Academy, the organization in charge of Hollywood’s biggest musical awards show, for omitting Mangeshkar’s name.
“First the Oscars, now no mention of #LataMangeshkar in the In Memoriam of the #GRAMMYs either. How clueless are these executives? Lataji was a bigger star than everyone on that Grammy stage tonight,” a user wrote.
“Grammy’s s*** for not including Lata Mangeshkar for the memoriam section. she’s one of the most iconic voices to ever grace this earth. just proves once again how isolated the grammy’s are and how they fail to include legendary voices known by billions. yes, billions,” wrote another user.
“So the in-memoriam segment of #GRAMMYs, just like the #Oscars2022, doesn’t include legendary #LataMangeshkar and then these award ceremonies will harp on about diversity & inclusivity. LOL!” wrote another.
While another user stated that they would boycott the Grammys for the rest of their lives because they failed to pay tribute to Lata Mangeshkar.
Lata Mangeshkar died on February 6, 2018, at the age of 92 weeks, after being admitted to the hospital with Covid-19 and pneumonia. Lata, born on September 28, 1929, began her career at the age of 13 in 1942. She recorded songs for over a thousand Hindi films during her seven-decade career. In addition, she recorded songs in over 36 regional Indian and foreign languages. In 2001, she was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, as well as three National Film Awards and numerous other honours.
