In the latest restriction on women's freedom, the country's Vice and Virtue Ministry has made it mandatory for female news anchors to cover their faces on air. When the new mandate was first implemented last week, there was little compliance, prompting the ruling group to enforce it last night.
Supporting the women after the Taliban decreed female newsreaders to cover thier face, The men in the rooms soon began to cover their faces. The male anchors have dressed appropriately and didn't have a hair out of place as they broke the news on-air while wearing masks.
In a quick stance hashtag started to hover with a buzz; #Freeherface, was trending on Twitter, with journalists, men and women, Afghans, and people from all over the world posting masked-up photos of themselves.
Earlier this month, the Taliban issued an order requiring all women to cover themselves from head to toe in public and to wear clothing that exposes only their eyes. The draconian decree allowed women to leave their homes only when necessary and listed punishments for male relatives if a woman violated the dress code. If the women refuse to comply, men can even be imprisoned.
During the Taliban's previous reign in Afghanistan, they imposed severe restrictions on women, including denial of education and exclusion from public life, among other things.
