Digital Desk: Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi appeared before the Kaliabor sub-divisional judicial court on Thursday (June 22, 2023) in regard to a case filed in connection with the Kaziranga eviction drive. The case, identified by number 282/17 of the PRC 282/17, is linked to an eviction that occurred near the famous Kaziranga National Park.
Earlier in 2016, Akhil Gogoi was detained during a press conference on charges of allegedly inciting people during the eviction near Kaziranga National Park. Two protesters lost their lives during the eviction drive in September, and several others were injured.
The incident in question occurred on September 19, when a police firing during an eviction drive resulted in the deaths of two people and the injury of 19 others, including 15 police officers. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has also taken note of the tragic incident and has urged that the Assam government produce a detailed report on the events leading up to the protester deaths.
