Digital Desk: On the nation's 77th Independence Day, actor Akshay Kumar received Indian citizenship after years of criticism over his Canadian citizenship.

Akshay Kumar said on X, sharing the registration document stated, "Dil aur citizenship, dono Hindustani. Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind!.”

In a previous interview, Akshay Kumar expressed disappointment about comments made about his "love for the country."

"India is everything to me... Everything I have earned and gained comes from this place. And I'm fortunate to have the opportunity to give back. You feel bad when people say things without knowing anything...," Mr Kumar had said in an interview with news channel Aajtak.

In 2019, he applied for Indian citizenship; however, the COVID-19 outbreak caused a delay in the procedure.

Following an interview with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kumar's citizenship in Canada became a topic of debate.

"I never thought that I should get this passport changed but now yes, I have applied to get my passport changed and once I get the renounced status from Canada...." he had said.
