Digital Desk: Veteran Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader and current Amguri MLA Pradip Hazarika submitted his resignation from the party on Saturday, one day after the release of the final delimitation draft, in protest over the abolishment of the constituency.
Going against the party leadership, which has generally supported the delimitation process, MLA Hazarika expressed his absolute displeasure over the diminution of the Amguri Constituency in upper Assam's politically vital Sivasagar district, which he had been representing for almost four decades.
He wrote in his letter of resignation to AGP President Atul Bora, "For me, Amguri is not only a constituency. It serves as both the foundation of my political career and a source of inspiration. Even though it is a member of the Assam government's ruling coalition, the AGP party has come under fire from the residents of my constituency for failing to stop the diluting of a historic district like Amguri."
The MLA declared his resignation from his position as party general secretary, his membership in the central committee of the party, and his other organisational positions and responsibilities.
It should be noted that, in accordance with Section 8-A of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, the Election Commission of India announced the final order for the delimitation of Parliamentary & Assembly Constituencies for the State of Assam on Friday. The final order was announced and made public in the Assam and Central Government gazettes.
