Digital Desk: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday assessed the nation's readiness to manage floods that annually impact various regions during the monsoon season. Areas like Bihar, Assam, and other eastern states often face inundation due to rising river levels caused by heavy monsoon rains.

"A high-level meeting chaired by the home minister reviewed the overall preparedness for flood management across the country," stated a spokesperson from the home ministry.

During the monsoon, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and several other states also contend with landslides and other rain-related challenges. Additionally, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Jammu and Kashmir have experienced flooding in recent years.

Attendees at the meeting included Union Minister of Jal Shakti C R Paatil, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai, Secretaries from ministries and departments responsible for Home Affairs, Water Resources, River Development, Earth Sciences, Environment, and Road Transport, as well as the Chairman of the Railway Board and officials from the NDMA, among others.

Currently, Assam is grappling with floods affecting several districts, impacting over 1.17 lakh people across 10 districts. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reported that floodwaters have submerged 968 villages in 27 revenue circles. The state has activated 134 relief camps and 94 relief distribution centers, providing shelter to 17,661 individuals. Tragically, the flood, landslide, and storm-related incidents this year have claimed 37 lives in the state, with one person reported missing.
