Following the allegation, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) responded by claiming that technical difficulties forced the cancellation of the programme. Arijit Singh was interestingly born in Jiaganj, Murshidabad, West Bengal.

Since a G-20 event is also scheduled at the same location, according to West Bengal minister and Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim, clearance was not given for Arijit Singh's event.

"The convention centre, which is just across from the Eco Park (the location of Arijit Singh's concert), will host the celebration commemorating India's G-20 chairmanship. There will probably be several foreign dignitaries present at that event, " Firhad Hakim stated as reported by the news agency ANI.

"Arijit Singh's performance would have drawn sizable crowds, which would have been challenging to manage. The police believed that holding such a large gathering might lead to a law and order issue, "said the minister.

The mayor added that another event with actor Salman Khan had to be postponed as well. "Salman Khan and Arijit Singh's activities had to be postponed due to worries about law and order issues. Additionally, we did not receive any applications for the Eco Park initiative "Added he.

BJP criticises TMC for hosting Arijit's concert

Arjit Singh's concert at Kolkata's Eco Park, according to the BJP, was postponed after the singer performed "Rang De Tu Mohe Gerua" in front of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the Kolkata International Film Festival. Amit Malviya of the BJP said that Arijit Singh's performance was cancelled because he sang "Gerua" in front of Mamata Banerjee.

"Sr Bachchan was on dot when he spoke about shrinking space for civil liberties and freedom of expression at the Kolkata Film Festival. Arijit Singh who sang “Rang de tu mohe gerua”, with Mamata Banerjee on the dais now finds his show at EcoPark cancelled by HIDCO, a WB Govt body," Malviya tweeted.

Scheduled for February 18, Arijit Singh's event has been shifted, according to the government organisation. It is to be noted that Salman Khan's performance is also planned to take place at the same location on January 20.
