Digital Desk: A 100-year-old bridge built during British rule fell in Assam's Karimganj district, injuring five construction workers, one of them was critically injured.
The iron bridge is located on National Highway-6 in the Chargola area. According to the Karimganj district administration, an RCC bridge was built near the old bridge, and they were attempting to rebuild it when the tragedy occurred, as reported by Hindustan Times.
"The old bridge collapsed while the workers were demolishing it. "Some of them have suffered serious injuries and have been brought to the Karimganj public hospital," stated a district official.
According to Karimganj's Additional Superintendent of Police, Partha Protim Das, there were no injuries in the incident.
Khairul Islam, Rubel Hussain Barbhuiyan, Akhtar Hussain Barbhuiyan, Subodh Das, and Chandan Debnath, all aged 22 to 28, were among those injured. As stated by the police, they are all citizens of the Karimganj district.
According to witnesses, the bridge collapsed at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and while some workers were able to escape, the rest fell into the Kachua River.
Locals accused the authorities of reportedly not employing contemporary equipment to deconstruct the old bridge, forcing labourers to destroy it manually.
