The people of Assam have been dealing with ongoing power outages for the past three weeks, which has made life intolerably miserable for them.

Digital Desk: Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi staged a protest on Monday over the state's power shortage ahead of the Assam Legislative Assembly's autumn session.

The MLA was seen protesting against the power issue in the state with load shedding during the intense heat wave outside the new Assam Legislative Assembly building in Guwahati's Dispur while holding a lamp and bisoni (Handmade fan of the Assamese community).

The people of Assam have been dealing with ongoing power outages for the past three weeks, which has made life intolerably miserable for them.

The Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma then stated that the state's current energy needs over 2,500 Megawatts. But he later visited with Union Power Minister RK Singh in New Delhi to inform him of the extraordinary 26% rise in power demand brought on by the expansion of the economy's productive sectors. The union minister promised to take into account giving Assam at least 3,000 MW of power.

With a lamp and a hand fan in his hands, MLA Gogoi protested the power outage and excessive prices today. He told reporters that Assam, comprising private and central sources, has a capacity to produce only 558.4 MW of electricity in 2023, according to data from the All India Electricity Statistics (General Review).

"Our state is only using 384 kilowatt hours of electricity today, while the other states are using more than 1,000 kilowatt hour," he said, adding that the administration has not yet made any plans to use this amount of power.

During the assembly's autumn session, it's expected that the opposition will bring up the matter of the power crisis.
