Digital Desk: In a recent incident, at least 157 workers who were employed on contractual terms in Assam's updating of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) have been fired.

The move came as a result of Partha Pratim Mazumder, the NRC Coordinator, choosing to hire new people in place of the departing ones.

The fired employees have been asked to submit all valuables and documentation by June 29, 2023.

A petition about the matter has been submitted to the Gauhati High Court by all of the Circle Project Supervisors who have been fired from their positions.

On July 30, 2022, Hitesh Dev Sarma announced his retirement and Partha Pratim Mazumder was appointed to take his place as the NRC's State Coordinator.
