This initiative targets communities residing on the fringes of forest areas, aiming to create viable and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
The core objective behind promoting vanilla, one of the world's most coveted and expensive spices, is twofold: to enhance the income of local residents significantly and to mitigate their dependence on traditional forest resources. By offering a lucrative alternative, the department seeks to reduce pressures on the region's rich biodiversity and natural habitats, aligning economic growth with ecological preservation.
Spearheaded by the Office of the Silviculturist, the programme commenced with extensive awareness campaigns designed to educate villagers about the economic potential of vanilla. These sessions were followed by practical, hands-on training in advanced scientific cultivation techniques, ensuring participants acquire the necessary skills for successful farming. To facilitate immediate engagement, free vanilla vine cuttings were distributed to all participants, empowering them to establish their own vanilla plantations.
