London: Assam origin Samir Bandopadhaya succeeded to become the first American to win the Junior Wimbledon title in 6 years on Sunday.

Samir won the Boy’s Singles Final against Victor Lilov of USA on Sunday at All England Club. Playing only his second Junior Grand Slam the 17-year-old won 7-5 6-3 in the final that lasted for one hour 22 minutes.

A resident of New Jersey Samir started his tennis carrier last year as per the report. Samir’s father was born in Digboi, Assam, and his mother is from Andhra Pradesh before both migrated to the USA in the mid-1980s and got married there.

Samir’s father who works in finance said to The Indian Express, “We’re not any different; we want him to do well in his academics.”

“He’s a solid student. For him, it was always important to go to a good academic institution as well as tennis. There are many colleges here that have a good tennis program, but we wanted a combination of strong tennis and academics. Of the prestigious Ivy League colleges, Columbia is the best at tennis.” added.

Moreover, the other tennis superstars to won this boys’ singles title include Stefan Edberg, Roger Federer and Gael Monfils.
