Digital Desk: In a significant move towards the Uniform Civil Code, the Assam Cabinet recently scrapped the Assam Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act, 1935. This decision, made during a Cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, aligns with the state's commitment to a more inclusive legal framework.
State Minister Jayanta Mallabarua, addressing the media, emphasized the decision as a crucial step towards achieving the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The move means that matters related to Muslim marriages and divorces would now fall under the Special Marriages Act.
The Chief Minister's commitment to the UCC was reiterated by Mallabarua, who announced the repeal of the 1935 Act, under which 94 Muslim registrars were still operating. Going forward, the registration of Muslim marriages and divorces will be handled by the District Commissioner and the District Registrar.
As part of this transition, the 94 Muslim registrars will be relieved of their duties, each receiving a one-time compensation of Rs 2 lakh.
This development follows the recent passage of the Uniform Civil Code Bill in Uttarakhand, making it the first state in India to replace outdated personal laws governing marriage, divorce, succession, and live-in relationships.
