Guwahati: As Assam transitions from immediate flood response to long-term recovery efforts, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commenced a tour of the state's flood-ravaged districts on Sunday. His itinerary includes a visit to Dibrugarh, followed by extensive travel through the worst-hit regions to assess the ground situation, review ongoing relief operations, and lay the groundwork for comprehensive compensation for affected residents.
The Chief Minister, in a public statement, affirmed his commitment to personally oversee the situation. "I will be reaching Dibrugarh shortly, and thereafter proceeding to meet people in the flood-affected areas. The objective is to review relief efforts and establish a robust assessment mechanism to ensure appropriate compensation reaches all those impacted," he stated.
These field visits come on the heels of significant relief announcements made by the Chief Minister on Saturday. Among the key measures is the waiver of electricity bills for July for domestic and Jeevan Dhara consumers in the severely affected districts of Sivasagar and Charaideo. This waiver applies to consumers utilizing up to 300 units of power, aiming to ease the financial burden on households grappling with flood aftermath.
Meanwhile, the flood situation has seen some improvements, even as the focus shifts to recovery. As of Sunday, the flood-related death toll across the state remained unchanged at 82, with no new fatalities reported in the preceding 24 hours. The number of people affected has also declined to 1.78 lakh. However, the geographical spread of the calamity has slightly widened, with the count of flood-hit districts increasing to seven, underscoring the widespread impact across the state.
