Chief Minister said that the review process is necessary to rectify shortcomings and ensure accuracy...

Digital Desk: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state's National Register of Citizens (NRC) needs a comprehensive review.

Speaking about the recent delimitation process in Assam, Sarma highlighted that indigenous people have been guaranteed approximately 97 of the 126 seats.

"The delimitation happened in Assam recently, and out of 126, we have secured almost 97 seats for the indigenous people. So that principle will continue even in the next delimitation," stated Chief Minister Sarma.

Addressing concerns over the previous NRC, Sarma said, "There is a demand across Assam to redo the NRC because, in the last NRC, there were various factors for which we could not do it properly. Now, a review petition is pending before the Supreme Court."

The Chief Minister said that the review process is necessary to rectify shortcomings and ensure accuracy. He highlighted specific areas of concern and stated, "We have sought a limited border review, with 10 percent in Assam and 20 percent in the Indo-Bangladesh border. If there are severe differences, then we will come to the Supreme Court."

Sarma reaffirmed the government's commitment to successfully addressing the challenges while acknowledging the complexity of the NRC. "We are willing to review the NRC to address any inconsistencies, and our goal is to guarantee equitable and just representation. "The restricted border examination represents a stride toward a more precise and comprehensive citizenship registry," he continued.

"If necessary, we will approach the Supreme Court to address any severe differences that may arise during the review process," stated the Chief Minister, expressing faith in the legal system.
