The summons was issued by the court of the additional judge and directed Sarma to appear before the court...

Digital Desk: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma was summoned by the district and sessions court in Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand, on Saturday in response to a complaint made by Ganesh Upadhyay, the Congress state spokesperson, regarding alleged defamatory remarks made by Sarma against party leader Rahul Gandhi during the campaign for the Uttarakhand assembly election in 2022.

The summons was issued by the court of the additional judge and directed Sarma to "appear before the court on September 21 to respond to the allegations".

Upadhyay stated in the complaint that "during a public rally in the district's Kichha town on February 11, 2022, Sarma had questioned Rahul Gandhi's lineage and made defamatory remarks against Sonia Gandhi.” He further alleged, "The remarks were inflammatory and a misuse of the IT Act."

Sarma had stated addressing a rally that, "India had carried out a surgical strike in Pakistan under the leadership of General Bipin Rawat, who was both the pride of Uttarakhand and the nation. Then Rahul Gandhi asked for evidence. Have we ever sought proof of which father's son you are? What right do you have to ask for evidence from the military?

While speaking with TOI, Upadhyay stated, " I believe in the principles of dignified political discourse. Not only were the comments made during the election campaign insulting, but they also went against the spirit of our democracy."
