  • Assam is enduring one of its most severe flood situations, with 78 fatalities and over three lakh people affected
  • A political debate has emerged concerning the underlying factors contributing to the escalating crisis

Assam is once again in the grip of a devastating flood crisis, with the death toll climbing to 78 and over three lakh individuals impacted across hundreds of villages. The torrential rainfall has triggered widespread inundation, prompting urgent relief efforts across the state.

As communities grapple with the immediate aftermath, a significant political debate has emerged regarding the long-term factors exacerbating these annual deluges. Questions are being raised about accountability and the effectiveness of current mitigation strategies.

While incessant rainfall in neighbouring Nagaland has been identified as a key contributor to the devastation observed in districts like Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat, experts point to a more complex interplay of environmental issues.

According to various analyses, the unprecedented scale of flooding stems from multiple factors. Intense rainfall in the upper river catchments rapidly increases water discharge, but this is compounded by reduced river carrying capacity. This reduction is attributed to extensive mining, widespread deforestation, hill cutting, and excessive siltation. The degradation and disappearance of vital wetlands further accelerate surface runoff, transforming heavy downpours into destructive floods.

Adding to the challenge is the undeniable impact of climate change. Warmer global temperatures are intensifying rainfall events, leading to more frequent and severe flash floods not just in Assam but across the entire Northeastern region. Indeed, Assam is not alone in its struggle, as other parts of the Northeast have also been reeling from heavy rainfall and landslides, highlighting a regional vulnerability that demands comprehensive, collaborative solutions.
