Guwahati: Guwahati High Court has granted 45 days to Assam Government to complete the detention camp construction work.

The detention camp (presently known as transit camp) is being constructed at Matia in Goalpara. It is about 150 km from Guwahati.

This transit camp is built to home the individuals listed and convicted as foreigners by the foreign tribunals. 

The cost of the transit camp carries ₹ 46 crores and will hold around 3,500 people.

Justice Kalyan Rai Surana asked the Home and Political Department of the Assam government to submit a report on the center's construction work after 45 days. 

The state government has informed the court that measures are taken to complete the construction. The government counsel asked for six weeks to finish the construction.

As per Assam government data, as of April 2021, 2,98,471 cases have been deployed by the Foreigners Tribunals, and 1,36,173 cases are pending.
