Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that the state administration intends to outlaw polygamy immediately and that a bill will be filed in the upcoming Assembly session.

Polygamy, or having more than one wife or husband at the same time, has become a recurring theme in India's continuing discussions regarding the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

The Assam government appointed an expert group to investigate the legal aspects of implementing the measure, which was considered the state's attempt to move closer to a Uniform Civil Code. The report is still in the works.

"We intend to introduce the bill in the upcoming Assembly section in September. If for some reason we are unable to do so, we will do so in the January Assembly session," the chief minister said on Thursday.

"In Assam, we want to outlaw polygamy immediately. However, once UCC arrives, we won't have to take any action because it will combine with UCC," he continued.

Himanta Biswa Sarma previously stated that the ban on polygamy would be implemented "through agreement rather than force."
