Digital Desk: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state government would develop a website to seek public input on the renaming of cities, towns, and villages that are “against” India’s history and civilization and “derogatory” to any caste or tribe.
CM Sarma Tweeted, “THERE’S MUCH IN A NAME Name of a city, town, or village should represent its culture, tradition & civilizations. We shall launch a portal to invite suggestions on change of names across Assam which are contrary to our civilization, culture & derogatory to any caste or community.”
CM Sarma declared yesterday at a Bhumi Pujan ceremony of a medical college in Kalaphar that the Assam government will change the names of locations and villages that did not reflect the state’s culture and heritage.
“There are some regions where the locals do not want to take the name. In some cultures, sites are named with malice in mind. This has to be removed.”
“I have requested the local MLA to consult with the people and provide an appropriate replacement. Kalapahar was been named after the Bengal Sultanate’s Muslim General Kalapahad. He was the mastermind behind the attack on the Shaktipeeth Kamakhya temple.” Assam CM said.
