CM Sarma outlined the government's intention to conduct a special census of indigenous Muslims...

Digital Desk: The Assam government has announced plans to close 1000 private Madrasas in the state. On the first day of 2024, the Chief Minister made this revelation, saying that although private madrasas are protected by the constitution, the state police and the Education Department are working to reduce their number.

In addition to the closure of these religious institutions, CM Sarma outlined the government's intention to conduct a special census of indigenous Muslims, commonly known as Assamese Muslims, by the end of 2024. This census aims to meticulously identify and document distinct communities within the Assamese Muslim population, spanning rural villages to urban municipal areas.

This move follows the prior shutdown of government-run madrasas in Assam, which were converted into general schools. Chief Minister Sarma has consistently expressed his commitment to prioritizing mainstream educational institutions over madrasas, evident in his March 2023 rally in Belagavi, Karnataka. The closure of private madrasas is part of a larger strategy to reshape the educational landscape in Assam, with the government actively negotiating their conversion into general schools.

This initiative underscores the state's dedication to modernizing education, ensuring that all institutions provide the necessary infrastructure and create a conducive learning environment for the comprehensive development of students. The Assam government's approach reflects a broader vision for an inclusive and progressive educational framework in the region.
