Digital Desk: The roadmap for implementing the Assam Accord remains uncertain, according to recent remarks by Assam Cabinet Minister Atul Bora. The Assam government, led by the BJP, has yet to submit a report from the committee chaired by Biplab Kumar Sharma, which was tasked with overseeing the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.
During an assembly session on Wednesday, Atul Bora announced that a comprehensive plan for the Assam Accord's implementation will be prepared within three months. He emphasized that the successful implementation of the Accord depends on cooperation from all parties involved. Bora stated, "The Assam Accord will be implemented within three months. Implementation is not possible without cooperation."
Bora explained that the state government has constituted sub-committees to address legal and constitutional challenges associated with Clause 6 of the Accord. These committees aim to remove any barriers that could hinder the Accord's implementation. He also mentioned that five meetings have been held to discuss the Accord's clauses thoroughly, with another meeting currently in progress.
Addressing concerns about illegal immigration, Bora reported that 30,113 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have been deported from Assam over the past 39 years since the Accord was signed. He assured that the government is actively working on this issue.
However, the Leader of the Opposition, Debabrata Saikia, criticized Bora’s announcement, accusing him of lacking substantive details. Saikia called for the resumption of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) process and the full implementation of the Assam Accord.
The BJP-led government’s commitment to the Assam Accord remains questionable, as indicated by Bora's statements.
