  • The monsoon's relentless downpour has caused extensive flooding across Assam, displacing nearly 1
  • 92 lakh people and inundating hundreds of villages across five districts

The ongoing monsoon season continues to wreak havoc across India, with Assam experiencing particularly severe devastation as floodwaters displace nearly 1.92 lakh residents. Five districts in the state—Sivasagar, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, and Charaideo—are bearing the brunt of the deluge, where 379 villages have been submerged and thousands of hectares of agricultural land destroyed.

As rivers swell dangerously, state authorities are working tirelessly, conducting round-the-clock monitoring and deploying relief and rehabilitation operations to assist affected communities. Despite the challenging circumstances, stories of extraordinary human resilience have emerged from the hardest-hit areas.

In Sivasagar's Nepali Khuti, for instance, six local villagers exemplified courage by using country-made wooden boats to rescue over 1,000 people. These individuals were trapped across five flood-affected villages after water levels surged unexpectedly. One of the rescuers, Chouhan Choudhury, recounted the harrowing experience, stating, "We had never seen water rise like this. We rescued everyone we could using our boats," detailing how families stranded on rooftops, elevated platforms, and even trees were safely evacuated.

Amidst the widespread emergency, state Minister Pijush Hazarika has reviewed relief operations in Demow and Nazira, underscoring the government's commitment to supporting those impacted. As the monsoon progresses, authorities remain vigilant, coordinating efforts to mitigate further damage and provide essential aid to the displaced population.
