Digital Desk: Home Secretary Siladitya Chetia and Assam IPS officer Shiladitya Chetia died by suicide at a private hospital in Guwahati after his wife passed away on Tuesday following a prolonged illness, police stated.
They reported that Chetia, an IPS officer from the 2009 batch, shot himself with his service pistol inside the intensive care unit where his wife passed away.
Before being appointed as the state's home secretary, he held positions as the commandant of the 4th Battalion of the Assam Police and the SP of the districts of Tinsukia and Sonitpur.
His wife had been receiving treatment for several days in a private hospital in the city, as she was in the fourth stage of cancer. Due to his wife's illness, the officer had been on leave for the previous four months.
The general public was told about the officer's passing by GP Singh, the Director General of Police in Assam. He said that shortly after his wife's cancer-related death, he committed suicide.
Talking to X, GP Singh wrote, "In an unfortunate turn of events, Sri Shiladitya Chetia IPS 2009 RR, Secretary Home and Political Government of Assam, took his own life this evening, a few minutes after the attending physician declared the death of his wife who was battling cancer for a long time. The entire Assam Police family is in deep grief.”
