Digital Desk: In a significant development, the prime accused in the Dhing gang rape case Tafazul Islam was declared dead following an intense two-hour rescue operation. Islam, who had been arrested on August 23 as the third suspect in the heinous crime, attempted to escape police custody early on Saturday morning. While being escorted to the crime scene for further investigation at around 4 am, he jumped into a nearby pond. 

Fearing he might have drowned, police launched an immediate search operation. After an intensive effort of two hours, rescue teams recovered Islam's body from the water. 

Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma promised stringent action against those involved in such crimes, emphasizing that existing laws and enforcement agencies are equipped to handle these cases. The search for the remaining two suspects involved in the gang rape is ongoing, as authorities continue their efforts to bring all perpetrators to justice.
