Discussions have been going on at various levels between Assam and Meghalaya to arrive at an amicable solution to the border issue

Digital Desk: Nityanand Rai, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, said the Upper House on Wednesday that conversations between Assam and Meghalaya at various levels have been ongoing in order to get an amicable solution to the border problem. He also stated that the central government has continued to act as a mediator in inter-state border conflicts. The response came after BJP Rajya Sabha MP from Assam Bhubaneshwar Kalita inquired whether it is true that the Central government undertook high-level conversations with the state governments of Assam and Meghalaya to address the two states' long-standing border conflict.

"In a written reply, MoS Rai said, "Discussions have been going on at various levels between Assam and Meghalaya to arrive at an amicable solution to the border issue. The approach of the Central government has consistently been that inter-state boundary issues can be resolved only with the cooperation of the State Governments concerned and that the Central government acts as a facilitator for amicable settlement of the boundary issue in the spirit of mutual co-operation and understanding." The boundary issue between the two neighbouring states culminated in confrontations, resulting in the deaths of six people. On July 26, 2021, at least 50 Assam police personnel were injured, including the Cachar district superintendent of police, in the bordering districts of Lailapur (Cachar district, Assam) and Vairengte (Kolasib district, Mizoram). Certain contested places along the Assam-Mizoram border have resulted in clashes between the two states since Mizoram's creation as a state. Earlier this month, BJP leader and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma intimated that the decades-old border conflict between the two states may be settled by a "give and take" formula between the two northeastern states.
