Digital Desk: Akkas Ali, the 35-year-old prime accused in the rape of an 11-year old girl in Chhaygaon, was shot by police while allegedly attempting to escape custody during an investigation late last night.


Ali, who was arrested by Palashbari Police following the incident, was being transported back to Chhaygaon around midnight for further investigative procedures.


According to sources, the shooting occurred when Ali reportedly attacked the police team in a bid to flee, prompting officers to open fire.


The suspect sustained a bullet wound to his left leg and is currently receiving treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).


While reports of the incident have surfaced, police officials have yet to issue a formal statement regarding the circumstances.
