At least 31 dogs that were brought in illegally from the Kuruwabahi area of the district were reportedly saved by a squad under the direction of the Bokakhat Officer-in-Charge.
Digital Desk: Amid an increase in animal smuggling, the Bokakhat Police on September 16 rescued 31 dogs after criminals failed to carry out their nefarious plans. At least 31 dogs that were brought in illegally from the Kuruwabahi area of the district were reportedly saved by a squad under the direction of the Bokakhat Officer-in-Charge.
The dogs were taken from the side of the road in sacks with only their heads poking out, their jaws and legs chained. Following the submission of a complaint against unnamed individuals, police started an investigation. The Bokakhat police are also trying to find any witnesses to the event.
"There have been no detentions. We found the dogs in the Kuruwabahi neighbourhood. We found that even though the dogs were being transported by a car, the thieves had left them on the highway since their vehicle had broken down ", according to Bokakhat OC.
The police are currently unsure of how and where to store them, though. Police are still looking for information about the smugglers and the origins of the dogs.
Those with knowledge of such covert actions claim that dog smuggling is frequent in Assam, where traffickers gather truckloads of stray animals by tempting them with food before seizing and tying them up for transportation into the adjacent state Nagaland for a substantial profit. This takes place at border checks between Assam and its neighbouring state right in front of the police.
