Guwahati: Assam fails in churning Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers from the state. According to the latest reports, it ranks among the lowest IAS produced states.
Ashok University Research Centre, in its research analysis, stated that Assam stands at the bottom position among the other northeastern states.
The analysis was done based on the number of IAS officers employed directly from 1952 to 2020 in the different cadres under the recruitment rules of the IAS, an all- India service.

Bihar and Jharkhand secure the top position with 10.7 percent. Rajasthan stands in the second position with 7.5 percent, Tamil Nadu with 6.8 percent, Punjab with 6.3, Kerala with 4.6, Orrisa with 4.5 percent.
While, the lowest IAS producing states include Nagaland with 0.38 percent, Mizoram with 0.42 percent, Meghalaya with 0.65 percent, Manipur with 0.72 percent and Assam with 1.1 percent.
Now the question arises that why Assam is lacking behind in churning IAS officers from the state?
Is it lack of enthusiasm among the students, lack of care, or is even more worrying?
Notably, like the candidates from top IAS produce states, candidates from Assam also enjoys the same quota system; however, it fails to make a mark in one of the toughest exams of the nation.
As per reports, Assam churned only few candidates to sit in the elite position per year.
Every year lakhs of students from different states sit in the exam organized by the Union Public Service Commission, but few conquered the milestone, while most candidates churned out from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, reports said.
It is to be noted that the research did not publish the complete list of IAS officers and their home states; however, despite of it, Assam stands in the same position as mentioned above.
