The arrest stemmed from a complaint lodged with the Directorate, accusing Bhattacharjee of soliciting a bribe of Rs. 2,000 in relation to a land-related issue.

Digital Desk: On Wednesday, Saumyabrata Bhattacharjee, a Senior District Administrative Assistant at the office of the District Commissioner in Cachar, Silchar, was apprehended by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam, for allegedly accepting a bribe.

The arrest stemmed from a complaint lodged with the Directorate, accusing Bhattacharjee of soliciting a bribe of Rs. 2,000 in relation to a land-related issue. Upon refusal to comply with the demand, the complainant sought intervention from the Directorate for legal recourse.

A sting operation was orchestrated by a team from the Directorate within the premises of the District Commissioner's office. Bhattacharjee was caught in the act of receiving a bribe from the complainant. The illicit funds were confiscated from him in the presence of impartial witnesses.

A case has been filed at the ACB Police Station on June 12, 2024, under ACB PS Case No. 47/2024, invoking Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. After gathering adequate evidence against Bhattacharjee, he was apprehended, and legal procedures are now in progress.

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption reiterated its unwavering commitment to combatting corruption and encouraged the public to promptly report any instances of malpractice.
